Rio de Janeiro, the "Cidade Maravilhosa" or Marvelous City, as it is called by locals and visitors alike, is a wonderful vacation getaway. And with a bar on nearly every corner, there's no end to local flavor. But if you're craving something a bit more familiar, try one of these American-style bars and restaurants. The retro and rustic décor of this American style sports bar is quite distinct from the traditional bars in the Copacabana area. Mud Bug's large selection of beers, with several domestic and imported beers on tap and bottled, give their customers plenty to choose from. Whether you prefer Irish or German, Mexican or Brazilian, there's a beer here for you. The bar hosts live music on a regular basis and shows sports games on the big screens. Menu items include bar classics like hot wings and fries smothered in cheese and bacon. Two locations in the Copacabana neighborhood; open from 5 pm until 3 am (as of February 2010).

More grill than bar, the Red House nevertheless offers occasional Happy Hours and a decent selection of beers. Located in the Downtown shopping mall in the Barra neighborhood, this is the place to go for an American-style burger or to satisfy your craving for food with a kick. Inside, guests can sit at wooden tables on one of two floors in the cozy brick and red atmosphere, or choose one of the outside tables for a chance to enjoy the weather and watch the shoppers strolling by. Ask the friendly waitstaff for one of the spicy (and saucily named) entreés and wash it down with one of their ice cold beers like the local Brahma or Antarctica brands.Opens at 12:00 pm with varied closing hours.

Serving California-style Mexican food in a cozy atmosphere, the Blue Agave is located in the Ipanema district, a popular place with both locals and foreigners. Limited seating is available. Just a block or so from the beach, this is the perfect place to finish off a day in the sun, as the casual atmosphere easily accommodates those in bikinis as well as the more conservatively dressed. Try their margaritas, which are possibly the best in the city, and the tortilla chips with real sour cream (a rarity in Rio de Janeiro). Menu items, like burritos and tacos, are also available. Opens at 12:00 pm (as of February 2010).
